the picnic spot

September 19, 2011

North Bethel, Maine

On our trip from Bar Harbor back to New Hampshire, we stopped for a picnic along the Androscoggin River in North Bethel, Maine.  It was a perfect early fall day with lots of warmth and sunshine.  Why not 6 months of this weather a year?

Mount Desert Island, Maine

Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island has had a summer colony since the late 1800’s.  It is a great place to take a unique boat tour of the island and Somes Sound which is the only fjord in the Continental US).

It is also a great place to see the latest in yachts and sailboats. One can dream…

after hurricane irene

Bar Harbor, Maine

August 29, 2011

Feeling very lucky to have missed the full wrath of Hurricane Irene.  We hunkered down in Trenton, Maine and lost power and water for a few hours.  The wind and rain were amazing but not disastrous here.

Thunder Hole

Thunder Hole is the place in Acadia National Park to experience the thunder of the sea against the rocky shores of Maine! On calm days you may wonder what the fuss is all about (let me hear it from all who wondered what the heck?). But wait until the waves kick up a few notches. Thunder Hole is a small inlet, naturally carved out of the rocks, where the waves roll into. At the end of this inlet, down low, is a small cavern where, when the rush of the wave arrives, air and water is forced out like a clap of distant thunder. Water may spout as high as 40 feet with a thunderous roar! Hence the name: Thunder Hole. This morning the walkway was closed to the public and I didn’t want to be down there anyway.

Here is another view of the waves crashing on the rocky coast line in the park.

The calm before hurricane Irene storms up the coast.  We are all prepared to weather the storm in our rv site near the Trenton Bridge on the Mount Desert Narrows.

This is a scenic bridge in the quaint town of Somesville on Mount Desert Island.  The town has convents to preserve the quiet island feel of this town.

Acadia magic

Bar Harbor, Maine

August 14, 2011

Having vacationed on Mount Desert Island for many years, we were floored by the August crowds.  We have never been here in July or August and now I know why.  Eagle Lake was as busy as we have ever seen it.  Even with rain clouds forming, the carriage roads were busy.  The lake was low and exposed many interesting rock formations.

The aquatic flowers were just amazing against the gray skies.

Headed to the quiet side of the island and rode the Long Pond Fire Road to Long Pond.  The magic of this peaceful lake was highlighted by the cries of the loons in the early morning light.

high tide

This is the view from our campsite on the East Bay of the Mount Desert Narrows at high tide in Maine.  Yes, have died and gone to heaven.  The lobsters have been great.  The view across the water is Mount Desert Island.

Low tide

This is the view the next day at low tide.  Revealed lots of interesting rocks, seaweed and other vegetation. Time to explore the tide pools.
