Classic & Street Rod Auto Show

Moab, Utah

April 23, 2010

We had a lot of fun this weekend with the Moab Classic and Street Rod Auto Show.  On Friday and Saturday nights, the Main Street was lined with people to watch the classics and street rods cruise the strip.  I had my wide angle lens and the drivers could see me taking pictures.  They would slow down and then light them up for us.  What a flashback!

Dick you would have loved this one.  It was much bigger than we imagined.  Brad guesses at least 300 classics were in the show being judged.  Many just brought their classics to drive the strip and soak up the compliments.

One of the  pics is of a southern lady driving the MG Midget and towing a tear drop. She had a custom made shade tent that attached to the back of the teardrop.

I am working on more pics to post on Flickr.  Some great old cars and trucks to see and a good time was had by all.

Hurrah Pass

The jeep ride to the summit of Hurrah Pass was fun and scenic.  We saw bands of four wheelers, mountain bikers and dirt bikers on the trail out enjoying the 75 degree spring weather.  This is a very active BLM recreation area with primitive camping and a load of trails.  The view from the summit was of the Colorado River, Dead Horse Point and Canyonlands.

Moab, Utah

We took the jeep on our first jeep off-road Moab ride to Gemini Bridges, through Pucker Pass and down Long Canyon.  It was a beautiful blue sky day with white cotton ball clouds.  I have posted pics of Brad from previous visits driving under this enormous boulder that has slid down from the high canyon wall.  This year we find that it had fractured and slid way down the canyon wall.  Brad was still able to drive under it (no way around).    I always hang back to click the pics and see if it really is safe!

Arches National Park

This is a shot of Brad admiring the expansive formations down Park Avenue in Arches National Park.  They really are like skyscrapers.  We have toured the park two days and keep finding new and interesting sights.  The weather is perfect in the low 80’s today.  This was taken with my wide angle lens.  There is a desert floor trail that leads through this amazing valley of towering red Estrada sandstone formation.

This is the view of the LaSal mountain range from our rv site in Moab.  It was snowing in the mountains when we arrived here.  The weather is cold at night but warms up nicely with blue skies.  The leaves on the trees are just starting to pop here.  Hope to have some spring shots of Moab to share.

Monument Valley

April 5, 2010

Monument Valley is a magical location with many faces.  We were under siege from the minute we arrived till the morning we departed.  The winds were relentless.  A constant wind howling from 30 to 60 mph.  The air was filled with red/orange sand. Everything was covered!

We braved the Monument Valley Drive that is a unpaved jeep road.  I would get out to take a shot of the most beautiful landscape that I have ever seen.  When I would run back to the jeep, my face, ears and eyes were caked with red/orange sand.

The most unexpected scene was that the Navajo actually live in this wondrous valley.  They still follow traditional lives and endure extreme nature.  We saw herds of horses and sheep grazing in the valley.  Wool is still spun for making textiles and blanket.

I do hope we can return and spend more time exploring this magnificent landmark.
